SQL FCI with AG - swapping roles between DC

$

Hi Team,

We have WSFC cluster (2 nodes running SQL FCI) in primary DC and 1 standalone node in DR (running SQL standalone with its own storage). Its a multisite setup.  SQL AG is running SQL FCI as primary and SQL in DR as Secondary replica. We are redesigning and future design we are looking for is - 4 node WSFC , 2 node SQL FCI in Primary (shared storage between node 1 & node 2) and 2 node SQL FCI in DR (node 3 nd 4 will have shared storage). We are planning to convert stand lone DR SQL to Failover (same configuration as of Primary DC) and later make it Primary and use Primary setup currently as DR due to some changes in datacenter. Setup is Windows server 2012 R2 with SQL 2014.

I am looking for pointers what are things that we need to consider and change in DR SQL standalone, first;  to make it SQL FCI, configure AG between Primary DC and Secondary DC (primary being Primary AG and DR node as secondary replica). Later SQL FCI in DR will be used as primary and current FCI SQL in primary datacenter will act as DR, would it be possible to do so? Just making SQL DR FCI as primary datacenter in AG would give the same experience technically as of primary AG today? Any pointers will be appreciated . Thanks

Hi Experts,

What I understand is that the developer edition has all the features of Enterprise edition. I that case I would presume that Alwayson groups can be setup for a developer edition. Can someone please confirm the same.

Thanks

Log shipping configuration fail with connection timeout

I am setting the log shipping on the 2 servers (SQL 2008R2) where both server at located at different remote area.

Using wizard, when I select the 2n server and click the connection button to connect to that server, i hit the error.

Here is the error :

Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

FYI, the OPTION button was disabled and this was not allow me to change setting of the timeout (in second). If the timeout to be able set to longer, I believe that the connection will be ok. Any alternative way for allow me to change this timeout setting?

What is the reason for this error it could happend? FYI, this 2nd server is new setup server and it was setup is purely for the logshipping purpose only. No other application others then SQL.

Thanks

But when i tried to create availability group with different collation other than turkish_ci_as it worked..

What am i missing here ? Any ideas ?

How can I quickly find out of my SQL servers are part of a Failover Cluster Instance

Hi - I am not a DBA but it has kind of been dropped on me - I have inherited 12 SharePoint farms with 2 x SQL 2012 servers in each and I know they are using Availability groups but is there any way I can quickly see if they are part of an FCI?

Cheers

Unable to apply KB3194720 on SQL Server 2014

Trying to install KB3194720 on our SQL Server 2014 server.  When we try to apply the KB the check box for the instance is grayed out.  When we click on the database service we see the following:

The version of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 12.0.2000.8, and the expected SQL Server version is 12.1.4100.1.

When I run @@version I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 - 12.0.4213.0 (X64)
Jun  9 2015 12:06:16
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.3 <X64> (Build 9600: ) (Hypervisor)

Looking at the initial message it would seem that SP1 is not installed, however, based on @@version SP1 is installed.

What am I missing?

3 nodes- Primary, secondary, and the FSW. All roles on Primary, including cluster itself. SQL AG running in async. All good. Should I be able to reboot secondary all day long without any cluster failings?

We are seeing a problem in prod, but not in any lower environments. Here's what happened- we put the cluster(normally in synchronous repl) into async, Making sure all roles, plus the cluster, are on the Primary, we paused the secondary first, and then took the secondary offline. Seems fine. When we booted back up, had to do an update so rebooted once more. The cluster freaked out, said that the Primary didn't have the most recent copy of the cluster config, kicked it out, also stated that the FSW failed to arbitrate, yet that box is up and running and I had an open ping from it to the cluster just to be sure.

Azure Replica Virtual Network does not populate with SQL 2014 SP2

I am trying to add an Azure Replica to my SQL Server 2014 Enterprise AlwaysOn Availability Group and the Virtual Network is not being populated. This is a known issue for the RTM version of SQL 2014 and is resolved with CU5. However, I am running SP2, CU2 and I am still experiencing this issue, as shown in the image below.

Does anyone know if this error was re-introduced with a subsequent service pack or update? Or any idea what I might be doing wrong? I created both a new Resource Manager and Classic virtual network to use for this and neither one shows up.

Links that describe this issue with RTM release of SQL 2014 are below.

Hi ,

Can we restore sql server 2012 backup from emc networker without using emc networker  client . For example in oracle we can use RMAN utility to restore backup from tape instead of using the emc networker  client utility.

Drop DB on AG Secondary when re-adding a DB to AG?

$

I suspect the answer is "no" so just looking for absolute confirmation I'm not missing something...

In my current client, its common for us to have to roll back a database to as far back as 6 months ago due to bad data (all of our data comes from text files, so reloading is no big deal).

Each of these customer dbs is in an AG for read offloading and DR.

When I remove the DB from the AG so I can restore an old backup, the db copy stays on the secondary in Restoring... status.

To re-add after the prod restore is done, I have to go drop the DB on the secondary manually, since this is is not in the wizard..

OR IS IT?!?!?    Am I missing it?

I know I can T-SQL this, or :Connect in SQL CMD mode...but is this option in the Wizard somewhere and I'm just overlooking it?  I have junior DBAs I that use the wizard for now, and even a couple of power user/non-DBAs that are allowwed to do this process.

SQL 2014.   Just looking to verify I am not missing something.  Is 2016 wizard any different?

Thanks,

SQL Server services restarting with error SQL Server component 'query_processing' health state has been changed from 'clean' to 'warning'

Hi Experts,

One of our cluster box is on Windows Sever 2008 R2 Enterprise where we have Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP2) services on one node and SQL Server 2012 Analysis server on the second node. Its and active-active setup. Recently we are facing problem for frequent restart of SQL services. During last 2 months it has restarted almost 5-6 time.

We are not able to find out any error in windows event logs, SQL server logs which might give reason of restarting SQL services.

We checked cluster log we found below error messages where “SQL Server component 'query_processing' health state has been changed from 'clean' to 'warning'” just before the SQL services restarted.

Server CPU, Memory utilization was normal at that time.

If anyone has faced similar problem and have resolution for the same will be really helpful.

Below is the Cluster log at the time of Failure

Should Activity Group Databases Not Automatically Start Re-synchronizing after failover?

When I failover during testing (SQL Server 2016) I am noticing that my AG databases stop synchronizing across all servers.  Do I manually have to go tell them each one of them to start re-synchronizing every time on each replica everytime I perform a failover?  I have quite a few databases and the list grows daily.

fyi-  My current setup is 2 synchronous replicas and 1 asynch replica.

Stretched/Multisubnet Cluster Quorum

$

Hi All,

We are trying to setup a Multisubnet cluster between two different location and have a question in Quorum setup. Keep in mind that we have no SAN or any other replication between the two sites. This is going to be a 4 node cluster (2 in production Site and 2 in DR site). How would the Quorum should be setup ?. I have proposed to have a Quorum disk on each site (One for the Prod and one for the DR) and apply some kind of "OR" logic for it to work.

If we have the same type of Quorum disk on each side, would it work ?. When we failover to DR site, would it pick up the Quorum drive on DR site ?. What happens if we happened to lose the Prod site completely (From Quorum standpoint) ?.

Thanks for any help.

Hi there,

I use System Centre Operations Manager 2012 R2 and I use an always-on SQL cluster for the backend.

Issue I have here is even though the secondary replica is configured as readable but every time I failover to secondary SCOM loses its connection to the database with the following error

SCOM version: 2012R2 RollUp 9

SQL version: 2012

Always-On-Sudden Automatic Failover

$

Hi,

We are currently using SQL 2014 Always-On . We have cluster setup with three nodes , Node 1 and Node 2 have setup with Automatic failover , Node 3 is setup with manual failover.  Node 1 is the primary node, 2 and 3 are secondary

Occasionally Sudden Automatic Failover happen to Node 2 which becomes the primary node. Node 1 becomes out of Sync and we have to restart the SQL Service on Node 1 to bring it back in sync.

We always check that at the time of these sudden  failovers to see if there's any any particular network event ( like a switch down or loss of power), but usually the answer is that the network infrastructure is running normally.. Node 1 is a physical server and the server is up and running when this failover happen. We can confirm that because we can remote desktop to the machine of Node 1.

Not sure what's causing this. Below are some of the SQL Server log entries at the time of this failover:

1st message is usually this :

Message
A connection timeout has occurred on a previously established connection to availability replica 'Node3' with id [6C63DEA5-35E7-4C9A-A8B3-BE40752B1608].  Either a networking or a firewall issue exists or the availability replica has transitioned to the resolving role.

two minutes later this message:

The local availability replica of availability group 'SynergyDB' is in a failed state.  The replica failed to read or update the persisted configuration data (SQL Server error: 41029).  To recover from this failure, either restart the local Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) service or restart the local instance of SQL Server.

Message in the cluster events from the failover cluster manager:

Cluster node 'NODE01' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

SQL 2014 Build #:12.0.4100.1

Any help is much appreciated.Thanks,

LOG Backup on secondary replica AOAG

$

Hi,

We have an AOAG setup with one primary and one secondary. It has automatic failover and synchronized State.

As per MSDN,we can configure backups on secondary to reduce the load on primary.

We have configured Full and Log backups on secondary.

Will there be any data loss if the log backups are on secondary?

I have read that "even though the secondary replica was SYNCHRONIZED, the last_redone_lsn will have one log block ID less than the last_hardened_lsn.   This is because the last_hardened_lsn is not a true LSN, but rather a “Flush LSN”  points to the next log block ID following those log records that have been written to stable media".

Multiple Instances on Single Server Node in SQL AG

Hello Everyone,

I am new to SQL Server WSFC AGs, but I wish to know:

The maximum number of instances that can be setup on a single server node in a SQL Server WSFC AG. Any documented guidance ?

Furthermore can the instances co-exist as a side-by-side mixed install of SQL Server 2008,2008R2,2012,2012R2,2014 on the same server ?

Thanks

Installing SQL default instance on FCI

$

Hi Team,

I need to host database for configuration manager with AG. It seems Configuration manager with AG is not supported on named instance and need to be configured with default SQL instance. Since we have SQL Failover cluster, i am looking for some document/article that would help me installing SQL Default instance on SQL Failover cluster.

So its FCI in primary site and standalone in DR site. Plan is to have AG between sites. while configuring AG, does it support keeping instance names same (in this case SQL default instance name will same) in AG while creating primary and secondary replica?

Any pointers, article, document would be appreciated. Thanks

AG dedicated Replication Network properties in WSFC ?

$

Hi Team,

We have 2 node SQL FCI in primary (shared storage) and standalone SQL in DR site . We have AG configured between Primary site and DR site. We have 3 networks with subnet :

heartbeat - between 2 nodes in Primary DC

Replication - Between 2 nodes and DR node

Public - 2 node in primary and DR node

As of now we have created clustered virtual IPs (so that if 1 node is down 2 node in primary DC will understand the replication network) with different ports for each SQL instance that has AG configuration.

I want to know what should be the network properties of each type of network?

Pubic  -should it be Allow cluster network communication on this network with Allow clients to connect through this network?

Replication - should it be Allow cluster network communication on this network with allow clients to connect through this network? or 'Do not allow cluster network communication on this network'?

Private\heartbeat - Should it be ' Allow cluster network communication on this network ' with Allow clients to connect through this network?

Any pointers will be appreciated

Regards
