Greetings. I've been a DBA for a while and am really shocked I've never thought of/ encountered this scenario, but someone just asked me and I didn't know the answer. I've also spent some time googling to no avail, so....
Lets say a backup is in simple mode, and gets Full and Diff backups.
So a Full backup occurs, then a random automatic checkpoint, then a Diff backup. What is the Diff backup actually backing up? After all the log should have been wiped clean due to the checkpoint, so wouldn't there be data loss?
