SQL Server 2012 failover clustering PRIVATE NETWORK explained?

Hello.

I am planning to build a SQL Server 2012 Active/Active 2 node cluster on Monday.  This is my first time working with windows/sql clustering.  After reading tons of articles and how-to's and watching many video tutorials, I believe I have most everything understood and am ready for the build.  All except for the private networking.  I even think I have that understood (mostly) but the network team seems to have some misgivings due to the fact windows clustering private networking differs from solaris clustering (using veritas and LLT, which is a proprietary network transport).

For my setup, the physical windows servers have 2 nic cards.  1 will be used for the public traffic and the other will be used for heartbeat.  They are both patched into the same network switch.  They are both on the same vlan and both have IP's on the same subnet.  From my understanding, this should be sufficient (although I think some of the tutorials recommend using a seperate vlan for public and heartbeat traffic).

Could someone explain in basic terms what the private network setup should be, if not this?  Two of the questions the network guy is asking are about using separate vlans and whether the IP's for the private network need to be non-routable.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
