Hardware Issue: steps to recovery

SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Hyper-V server. The host developed a hardware problem which took the array out. We've been able to reneble the array and HP were insisting that there was no underlying hardware problems. This first happened on Monday, consequently my last known good tape backup is the 16th (full) and incremental subsequent to that.

The whole lot is supposedly supported by an IT company, but on Friday what I found was a number of databases with (Suspect) status and a few without the + sign to expand them in Management Studio. The company was advising me to restore those ones from backup, but I have since discovered that the issue there is that the database is open by another user (and this could be the backup agent).

So what I need to know is: what's the easiest way to get out of that situation? It may be to restore a backup but if it's not I'd rather not.

Also, how can I return a Suspect database to a place where I can restore from a maintenance plan backup (which is faster than tape). I have learned that it's not good to have maintenance plan backups and other backups of the same data - and if that's true then I'll incorporate that into what I do after this situation is resolved.
