Moving .mdf and ldf files without access to the sql console.

Hi,

I have a non critical sql server. The volume that contains the .mdf and .ldf file is running out of disk space but the server has an larger unused volume. I do not currently have admin access to the sql server itself (Just windows server admin).

Is it possible to shutdown the sql services > move the mdf/ldf files to the larger drive > change the drive letter of the new volume to be the same as the old one  > start the sql services? Downtime aside would the server perform as before or is this a bad idea?
