Read Only Routing

Hi All,

I have a question about connecting to an AlwaysOn Availability Group via the Listener that I hope someone can help me with.

If I connect to the AG via the Listener using SSMS, I understand that by default I am effectively connecting to the primary replica in my AG.

My question is if I connect to the AG via the Listener using SSMS, but specify the ApplicationIntent=ReadOnly parameter in the Additional Connection Parameters, what server do I connect to - is it still the primary replica or would it be the replica I have configured with Read-Intent Only specified as the value for the Readable Secondary?

Reason I ask is that when I connect using the ReadOnly parameter, I can run a query on a table withing an AG database fine (which is what I would expect). At this point, I'm kind of assuming I'm accessing the database on my replica I have configured as Read-Intent. But, when I stop the service on this replica, my query still runs fine, without any indication that it has switched replicas, which has me thinking that I have been connected to the primary replica all the time.

Hope this makes some sort of sense.

Thanks,

Bob
