What happens when the primary server is shut down in an always on configuration

Hi!

I have built a 2 node SQL 2012 Always on cluster. When I fail it over it all seems to work fine.

So we did a DR test by powering down the primary server and now the databases on the secondary server are tagged as 'Recovery Pending'. They are inaccessible.

I thought that in Always ON, powering down the primary server you could still access the secondary server databases.

Is this not the way its supposed to work?

Thanks,

Zoe
